Trauma Therapy, Dissociative Disorders Therapy and ADHD Evaluations in Buffalo, New York, Pennsylvania and Oregon
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 10 years of experience. My style is structured but down to earth with warmth and humor sprinkled in.
I am EMDR certified; that means I work with folks who have been through difficult and painful experiences that continue to affect their life today. Some of those experiences may include neglect, loss, abuse or stigma. I use a social justice lens and provide weight neutral care. I acknowledge the systems that keep folks oppressed and the challenges and trauma that those systems create.
I am currently accepting clients who need support with the following:
Dissociative Disorders, including those with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
Complex trauma (CPTSD) and PTSD or those specifically looking for trauma reprocessing through EMDR or IFS
Those in larger bodies looking to heal their relationship with food and or body and are not looking for assistance with intentional weight loss
Those in need of a Neurodivergent Affirming ADHD Evaluation
about Sam (she/her)
Working with complex trauma and dissociative identity disorder (DID) is the passion of my career. I love getting to know people's internal worlds. Every system I've worked with knows exactly how to protect itself. It's often brilliant, resourceful, and born out of necessity. Sometimes it just needs some tweaking and updating so those protections can evolve alongside you, rather than holding you back.
My clinical approach draws on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS), utilizing models of both that are adapted specifically for the treatment of DID and complex dissociation. This integrative approach supports the processing of traumatic material while honoring the protective function of each part of the internal system.
I believe healing happens best in a relationship with a therapist who sees you fully. That includes seeing the ways systemic oppression, capitalism, and social inequity shape mental health. I'm openly political in my community and practice, and I don't believe therapy is neutral. I'm also a Health At Every Size (HAES) or weight neutral provider: I don't promote intentional weight loss and I recognize the full range of factors, including trauma, genetics, marginalized identities, socioeconomic status, and ability, that shape someone's health.
My ideal client has often done therapy before, maybe even years of it, and is ready to go deeper. Many of my clients are politically engaged, tired of oppressive systems, and looking for a therapist who shares their values and can hold the weight of more intensive trauma work.
My Background
I've had my own severe struggles with mental health throughout my life, including eating disorders, panic disorder, and PMDD. There was a time I believed, at my core, that I was disgusting, not good enough, and unlovable. Trauma work, specifically IFS, saved my life. It's the reason I do the work I do now, and it drives me daily in session.
Outside of the therapy room, I'm a writer, a painter, and a caregiver. I have a little trouble sitting still! Pickleball, swimming, playing catch, board games, video games… I’m in! That playful, curious energy shows up in session too. Healing doesn't have to be all heaviness all the time.
